I am a New Jersey portrait photographer who loves to photograph newborns. I have created this list of commonly asked questions, to help you plan your newborn portrait session. Additional information, as well as a selection of my photographs, is available in my Newborn Client Welcome Guide. I hope to speak with you soon to schedule your session.

When do newborn sessions take place?

Newborn sessions are best when done from 5-10 days after birth. It is during this time, that the baby is most sleepy and amenable to being handled. This is the ideal time period for capturing the iconic squishy newborn poses that are so beloved.

How much does this cost?

The session fee is $300. This includes your pre-consultation, travel, shooting time, and clean digital processing of your image gallery. Product packages start at $550 and up, and include the session fee. The typical client usually invests about $800 to $1000. If you are interested in discussing detailed pricing and products, please contact me to schedule an in-person consultation.

Do you offer payment plans?

My clients pay in three installments: 1) The $300 session fee is due at the time of booking to reserve your session date. 2) 50% of the package price is due on the day of the session, prior to the start of shooting. 3) The balance of the package price is due upon receipt of your online image gallery.

When should I book my newborn session?

Newborn portrait sessions should be booked during the mother’s last trimester to ensure your date is available. I never accept reservations for more than two due dates in one calendar week. This ensures that if a delivery occurs a bit late, or a bit early, I will have plenty of time to sneak the unexpected little bugger into my calendar.

How do I book the session?

Prior to booking, we will meet for a pre-consultation. At that time, we will discuss your wishes and desires for your baby’s heirloom images. If you wish to proceed with booking, I will request a non-refundable retainer and signed portrait contract agreement in order to secure your date.

How can I schedule a date when I’m not certain when he/she will be born?

This is simpler than it sounds! We will select a booking date seven days after your “expected” due date. This date is only a placeholder, since babies rarely arrive on schedule! When you deliver, please have a friend or loved-one call me. The sooner you notify me, the better--I need to get you written in bold marker on my client calendar within that ideal 5-10 day period. When you and baby arrive home, call me right away to confirm your actual date.

Where does the session take place?

I am an on-location, natural light photographer. I will travel to your home, or the location of your choice. Ideally, your pre-consultation should take place at your desired location, so I can evaluate the light and space.

How long does it take?

In a perfect world, your newborn photo session will be less than two hours. But, these sessions often run long, as each baby has their own agenda! Some little ones just need a bit more time, and it will be given. I do not rush, and will take the time necessary to ensure that you have beautiful photographs. Please allow for three or more hours.

Do you offer concept shoots that incorporate my own props and heirlooms?

Absolutely! If there is a special item you wish to feature, please let me know early in the booking process. I will gladly order specific items for your session with at least 30 days notice, and subject to the production and delivery schedule of the manufacturer.

Do you take sibling and family portraits as well?

I certainly do. Please keep in mind that sibling(s) might not be as cooperative as you hope. Generally, with a bit of support, they will cuddle up to their newborn brother or sister. But, if it doesn’t work out, I’ll focus on ensuring you receive the newborn images you desire.

Will my baby’s poses be exactly like those featured in your portfolio?

Not all babies are comfortable in every position. If you have a favorite pose, I will happily make it a top priority. But, if your little sweetie isn’t comfortable, I will try something else. Guess who is the boss at the session!

Do you offer birth announcements?

Yes. My birth announcements are personalized and quoted based on the style, size and paper-type desired by my clients. For a look at some of the card options, click to view my Birth Announcement Information Guide.
